An envelope fell out of a stack of mail at my desk a few months ago. It was at work, and the hand-written note was from a woman who I had worked with several years prior.

The note read:

Dear Gennifre,

Thx for leading the way in your social media with your boys. A life of adventure. A life of being a single mom. You give me courage. Have you ever considered a blog?

Love, D

Tears sprang to my eyes and my breath shortened. How in the world was I a source of inspiration to anyone?

As a teacher, I thrive on letters from students who emerge from my past to tell me about the influence I’ve unintentionally had on their lives through our times together in the classroom. My former students have written.

But, I’ve never received a letter from an adult woman who said that my post-divorce life was giving her the courage to navigate hers.

I left the letter, unanswered, on my desk as I thought about how to best respond. Should I call her? Should I send her a letter in return? Instead, I decided to start a blog, with her love and letter as my inspiration.

Yes, D. I will start a blog.

I don’t know what kind of wisdom I have to share. But, I do know that I was dealt a series of startling hands of cards and still wake up each day and find my stoke.

And, I've got some stories to share.
